Yan Zhenqing (708-784), a Tang calligrapher, after thoroughly studied previous calligraphy, incorporated the four calligraphy styles of zhuan (seal character), li (official script), xing (running hand) and kai (regular script) into the new “Yan” calligraphy style. The “Yan” style emphasized gracefulness, grandness, boldness and strength, and influenced the style of Tang calligraphy, also taking Chinese calligraphy to new realms.
