On Nov. 17, 1957, a female Chinese athlete named Zheng Fengrong broke the women's high jump world record set by American athlete Mildred McDaniel. The previous record of 1.76 m was broken by Zheng with her 1.77 m jump at Xiannongtan Stadium at the athletics meet in Beijing. Zheng was the first Chinese woman to break an athletic world record.
