On September 27, 1949, the song March of the Volunteers was selected as the National Anthem of the People's Republic of China. Withmusic and lyrics by Nie Er (1912-1935) and Tian Han (1898-1968), the song premiered in 1935 as part of the film Children of Troubled Times.

March of the Volunteers initially earned the status of temporary national anthem during the first session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in 1949. On March 5, 1978, the song was formally selected as the National Anthem during the first session of the fifth National People's Congress (NPC).
