New page

The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864) formed out of a great peasant revolution. In early 1851, about 20,000 male and female peasants and handicraftsmen, followers of Hong Xiuquan, assembled in Jintian Village, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The formerly loosely knit organization consolidated on January 11, 1851, into the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and publicly announced its opposition to the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The event is known as the Jintian Uprising.

The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom existed for 14 years, the longest peasant regime in Chinese history. Although it was finally suppressed, it dealt a heavy blow to the Qing and accelerated the collapse of feudalism.
