Starting at [[Turpan]] and terminating at [[Kashi]], the railway extends along the ancient [[Silk Road]], passing through the [[Tianshan Range]] and to the north of the world-renowned [[Taklimakan Desert]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The 476.49-km Turpan-Korla section had been completed and opened to traffic in 1984, creating southern [[Xinjiang]]'s first railway. The Korla-Kashi section, stretching 969.88 km, began full operation on Dec 9, 1999. With an investment of 6.3 billion yuan (US$ 923 million), construction of this section lasted three years and three months.&lt;br /&gt;
