The dam project of '''Sanmen Gorge''' on the [[Yellow River]] was completed on [[CIIC:Selected anniversaries/December 9, 2009|Dec. 9]], 1958. Started on [[April 13]], [[1957]], it was the biggest and most comprehensive project for flood control, electricity generation and irrigation aiming to tame and explore the Yellow River. Situated in Shan County of [[Henan]] province and Pinglu County of [[Shanxi]] province, the dam would form a 3,500-sq.km reservoir with a holding capacity of 64.7 billion cu.m, able to irrigate fields over an area of 40 million mu, or almost 27,000 sq.km.
