New page

The League of Chinese Left Wing Writers was a modern art and literature group. The founding conference was held in Shanghai on March 2, 1930. The first 50 members passed its guiding principles at the conference. Shen Duanxian, Feng Naichao, Qian Xingcun, Lu Xun, Tian Han, Zheng Boqi and Hong Lingfei were elected as the standing committee members. Zhou Quanping and Jiang Guangci were alternate members. Lu Xun made a speech titled "Some Suggestions about Left Wing Writers League". He asked revolutionary writers to engage in social struggles.

The league set up branches in Peiping, Tokyo, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Wuhan and Nanjing, attracting numerous young, left wing supporters.

The Kuomintang government suppressed the league by banning branches, arresting members, closing book shops, censoring articles and assassinating revolutionary writers.

Its literature achievements included Mao Dun's full-length novel Midnight and short fiction Trilogy of Villages and Lu Xun's essays and historical fiction Old Tales Retold.

The league dissolved at the beginning of 1936.
