New page

The Iron Pagoda, located on Yi Peak northeast of Kaifeng, is also known as the Pagoda of Youguo Temple. It was built in 1049. Octagonal in shape, it has 13 stories, rising to a height of 54.66 m. It is called Iron Pagoda because the brown glazed bricks of its outside walls are similar in color to iron. It is one of the earliest building put up with glazed bricks in China.

The pagoda is composed of three parts—base, body and spire. Because of inundations by the Yellow River, the base is buried underground. The designs of the glazed brick inscriptions on the pagoda include flying apsaras, auspicious kylins, Bodhisattvas, warriors, and lions.
