His most important work, the ''Gushi Bian'' (Debates on Ancient History), marked an important milestone for modern historiography in [[China]], in which he argued that ancient texts did not necessarily report real facts but were often relaying myths.<br /> <br /> Born on [[May 8]], 1893, in [[Suzhou]], [[Jiangsu]] Province, Gu graduated from [[Peking University]] and later taught there. He then served as director of the History and Language Institute at [[Sun Yat-sen University]] and the Chinese National Culture Institute at [[Qilu University]].
