New page

Gu Jiegang (Chinese: 顾颉刚) was a Chinese historian. His most important work, the Gushi Bian (Debates on Ancient History), marked an important milestone for modern historiography in China, in which he argued that ancient texts did not necessarily report real facts but were often relaying myths.

Born on May 8, 1893, in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Gu graduated from Peking University and later taught there. He then served as director of the History and Language Institute at Sun Yat-sen University and the Chinese National Culture Institute at Qilu University. He also was the first person to study historical Chinese geography and Chinese folk customs.

Gu's other works include Shangshu Tongjian (A General Inspection of Shangshu: A Collection of Ancient Texts) and Alchemists and Confucian Scholars in Qin and Han Dynasties.
