Professor Qian was born in [[Wuxi]], [[Jiangsu]] province, and graduated from [[Tsinghua University]]. He headed the China branch of the [[Internet Society]] in the [[Asia-Pacific region]]. He worked as an information security expert for the [[Information Work Leading Group of the State Council]]. He was also the deputy director of the [[Work Committee of the China Internet Network Information Center]]. On Sept. 20, 1987, he sent China's first email via the internet to [[West Germany]]'s [[University of Karlsruhe]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He passed away in Beijing on May 8, 1998.&lt;br /&gt;
