On September 29, 1913, China's first feature film, ''Nan Fu Nan Qi'' (A Couple in Difficulty), was shown in [[Shanghai]]. Although Chinese film had started more than 10 years before this one, the previous films only featured actions without plots and some segments of drama. Themed on a custom of mercenary marriage, the film described how a matchmaker setup two strangers for marriage. It was written by [[Zheng Zhengqiu]], jointly directed by Zheng and [[Zhang Shichuan]] and screened by the Asia Film and Theater Company.
