'''Xiao Hong''' (the penname of [[Zhang Naiying]]) was born on June 2, 1911 in [[Hulan]], [[Heilongjiang Province]]. She lost her mother in her childhood. At 17 years old, Xiao Hong began to study at a girls' high school in [[Harbin]], where she came in touch with the progressive ideas which had emerged since the [[May 4th Movement]] of 1919 and with Chinese and foreign literary works which broadened her outlook. She was deeply influenced by the works of [[Lu Xun]], [[Mao Dun]], and L. Sinclair. In the winter of 1930, Xiao Hong ran away from home because she felt dissatisfied with her feudal family and arranged marriage.
