New page

Big underpants (大裤衩) is the newly-built headquarters of China Central Television (CCTV).

Located in Beijing's Central Business District (CBD), the 44-storey controversial luxurious building is 234 meters tall with a highly unusual shape, nicknamed "Big Underpants".

The skyscraper was designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas working with the Rotterdam-based Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), a leading architecture firm in the world.

Construction of the building lasted for eight years, from 2004 to 2012. It's currently the 346th tallest in the world.

The skyscraper was named the overall winner of the "Best Tall Building Worldwide" by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) during its 12th Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner in Chicago on Nov. 7, 2013.

It made a list of "terrible buildings worth tearing down" in a survey by the London-based Financial Times among its journalists around the world.
