Hosted by a different country annually, the IOI promotes computing skills among young people and offers participants an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the host country. <br /> <br /> Only 13 teams participated in the first IOI in [[1988]], but the popularity of the contest spread rapidly. More than 200 contestants from 70 countries and regions participated in the 12th IOI in [[Beijing]], which was also the first time the contest was held in the Asia-Pacific region. <br /> <br /> Contestants have to perform computer programming tasks against the clock.
